Enjoy your spinning, crafting, gardening and living life ... that's where I will be too, oh and Instagram too.

I am again not sure if I will continue with the WW gathering, finding the time is difficult and the last few months have been quiet with link-ups so I'm not sure it is worth my time, even though a few crafting bloggers said they would like to see it continue (?).
I shall keep up with blog reading when I can and continue to post pictures and projects. I'll review it again soon, but find the quickness of posting pictures and seeing other fibre crafters pictures on Instagram easier to find the time for.

Whether you are a regular or a new visitor - come and share what you have been doing with wool or fibres in the last month, or plans for the month(s) ahead. All crafts and inspiration welcome. I look forward to regularly sharing this space with you here.
Hmmm that's something I could blog about soon, but it's not for a woolly Wednesday post!

I am spinning a dye fibre braid I have had a while, blues and greens and other colours thrown in. I like the spun singles, but there is just something about it plied that doesn't quite grab me. It's still on the bobbin so I'm hoping when I wind it off onto the niddy noddy I will see it in a better light.

I have been knitting. The biggest accomplishment was knitting with the green yarn I shared a picture of last month. This was spun with a project in mind - lots of shades of green for a Sheep Heid hat for my husband for his birthday, that was just after Christmas. But he knew it was going to be a little late. I cast it on and really got into the swing of knitting it and it was finished about 5 days later. I love it. He loves it. Many people have commented how lovely it is. I like it more than my own Sheep Heid knitted last year in natural shades, typical eh!

I also knitted a pair of socks from some handspun yarn. The yarn is Jacobs that was a gift in batts with the different colours separated. I had navajo plied it to keep the colours separate and stored it awaiting inspiration. I wanted some warm socks and knowing this was a 3 ply yarn I thought it was perfect.
Between Christmas and New Year I always lose track of what day it is, so on Monday I was thinking when is the first Wednesday of January only to look up at the calendar and realise it was the 1st. So it's a very Happy New Year Woolly Wednesday today. I wish everyone a wonderful year full of woolly inspiration and adventures.

So since my last WW post I was knitting some little Harry Potter character dolls for my daughter for Christmas and am pleased to show you the finished dolls which were my aim - Harry, Ron and Hermione. I have since Christmas cast on for Hagrid, and Dumbledore is planned, Dobby ... you get the picture - I could be knitting these on and off for a while!

I finished these around the 19th/20th December so was looking for something else to knit. Recently I've found on cold days that my hands get a little cold when knitting or crocheting so I had an idea brewing about some fingerless mitts to wear when knitting. I have worn handwarmers before but they slip and move and made the palms of my hand too warm. So I pondered and even got a pencil and paper out to sketch an idea.

So the idea was to knit some very close fitting fingerless mitts, with a short finger bit for the base of my fingers, a gusset for my thumb and casting off to have a "hole" on the palm of my hand.

I cast on from the cuff, and tried them on as I went along to check they were close fitting so they wouldn't move about too much whilst knitting. Knit in the round until the gusset for the thumb, rejoined in the round and then cast off a number of stitches for the palm. Re-joined in the round for the base of the fingers and then seperated the stitches and knit each finger bit in the round.

Sound weird? Probably look a bit odd too, but they absolutely fitted the inspiration! They fit perfectly, don't slip around and keep the parts of my hand that were cold warmer but without the palm of my hand getting too hot and potentially sweaty. Having the majority of the finger still uncovered and the palm uncovered means I can feel the yarn, the needles and the work in progress. Perfect!

These kept me busy to Christmas with everything else going on. I finished the 2nd one just after Christmas as I had a sudden urge to knit something else on Christmas Eve!

So Christmas Eve, no wrapping to be done, just time to sit and relax with a glass of mulled wine, I grabbed my project bag (which had the mitts in it) and decided I wanted to start something new. So I picked out my Rainbow yarn that I spun a few months ago - 1 ply of Masham rainbow dyed fibre, 1 ply of Tussah Silk rainbow dyed fibre. I totally love this yarn and have been desperate to knit with it. So I looked through some patterns I had saved and cast on a reasonably plain shawl/scarf with it - didn't want to go for anything with a pattern as it would have got lost in all the colour runs. Knitted on and off for a few days and here is the result.

It needs blocking which will fan out the sections, however I am contemplating just blocking the body and leaving the edges wavy as I like how they look. We shall see how it goes.

After a gap not spinning, and oh how I missed it, I have been spinning various shades of green that I started a while ago. These are for a Sheep Heid hat for my husband for Christmas. Yes I know it's late but he got an IOU wrapped up and knew it wasn't going to be ready. Something to look forward to . I have plied and wound some of the shades ready to cast on, it may even have been cast on by the time I click publish.

Other bits of spinning have been going on too, and more this week. These skeins I spun a little before Christmas, and they are now giftwrapped for a friends birthday today!

Lots more spinning and knitting for 2014. No resolutions as I don't make any, but I will say I shall be having fun with my wheels, needles, hooks and weaving tools over the next 12 months and look forward to sharing this space with you.

Have a wonderful 2014 x
Woolly Wednesday sleeping ...Oops, I just realised it is Wednesday, but the 2nd Wed of the month so that means I missed Woolly Wednesday posting last week. Sorry, just busy here.

So instead, how about we resume again in 2014!

Do other bloggers still want to join in the Woolly Wednesday? Just pondering for now, can still keep in touch with other blogs so wondered if it was still worth posting the linky. Your thoughts in the comments would be appreciated (if you want to leave a comment that isn't published, just let me know and I will read it but not publish it). I intend to keep blogging, so will catch up with you all on your blogs even if the linky came to an end. We'll see, but please let me know either way.

Have a lovely Christmas/Festive season everyone, hope to see you again in the New Year.Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16121342298237870670noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7795812784322982565.post-74399903358282843392013-11-18T21:42:00.000+00:002013-11-18T21:42:03.828+00:00I Yarn bombed my chair! So the Guild challenge piece I've mysteriously mentioned over time is a chair that I yarn bombed. Spinning, knitting, crocheting and have been felting a little lately too. Ah it must be time for Woolly Wednesday.

Since my last post on spinning, yes last months WW (still not finding more time to blog yet!), I continued to spin the Masham rainbow fibre. This was so lovely to spin, such a lovely feel to the yarn.

Masham fibre and spinning on the bobbin

I then also spun another rainbow of Tussah silk fibre. A different rainbow, different dyers, with similar shades to the Masham but also some differences. My idea was to ply these two together, not knowing how it would look.

Tussah Silk and spinning on the bobbin

(still have a skein of this silk to spin!)

To say I was pleased to see these plied together would be an understatement. I love how they plied together, sometimes the colours matched up, other times not, but love the overall look. This is destined to be a shawlette/scarf for me but the knitting hasn't started yet due to other projects and commitments.

Silky, smooth and scrumptious!

Soon after finishing this yarn it was our Guilds sampling day with Winghams visiting and filling the hall with all their goodies. I didn't really have a lot I wanted to pick up, just a few bits and pieces, but went with the intention to have some fun sampling fibres. And fun I had. There was a moment in the afternoon that I (and others!) embraced the trilobal fibre - blending it in with everything. Gold, silver, copper and rainbow trilobal were consumed by the wheels!

I always come away from guild meetings inspired to do more and dug into bags and picked out oddments of fibres and continued to create a medley of samples. The results of all this fun are below which is navajo plied to keep the colours and blends seperate.

2 skeins from sampling day and fun at home

Still inspired by this I then dug into my box of dyed merino fibres, mostly used in felting, and selected handfuls of many many colours and laid them out in a rainbow. Spinning from one end of the colour wheel of fibre to the other, navajo plied to retain the colours again and it resulted in these lovely skeins - squeeeeeee I love these and plan to do this again, a lot.

Couldn't resist a picture of all the rainbow and sample yarns together, makes me smile!
Now the bobbins once again lay empty, waiting for my next inspiration.

I have been busy knitting and crocheting too. After finishing previous projects I decided to pick up a project I started back in May and knitting a few rows and then put down not to be picked up again until last month. It's my Sheep Heid hat, a fabulous pattern, made with singles yarns of various breeds - mostly Icelandic shades (5 of them), with some Shropshire, BFL, Norwegian, and maybe another that I can't remember now. I adapted the pattern to suit my preferences, keeping the sheep and the rams heads.

I love this hat, had a few arrrggh moments - just me not reading the pattern from the correct point on the charts, but nothing major, just my own lack of concentration. I would totally recommend it as a pattern and have plans to make another soon.

I also have been knitting and crocheting a few hats and scarfs to send to The Great Syria Knitting Project, to give warmth to the children affected by the ongoing Syrian conflict; many of whom have lost everything, displaced from their homes. It warms my heart to know that I have been able to create something to keep them warm this winter.

My other knitting and crochet is .... a secret! Cannot share it yet, nope sorry. It's something previously mentioned and been an ongoing project, and is now nearing the end. It's something for our Guilds annual challenge which this year was entitled "2nd time around", to be interpreted as you like but with the emphasis and recycling or re-using something, giving life to something that may have been discarded. This is going to guild on 16th November, so if I can get organised I will post about it then and if not it will feature in Decembers Woolly Wednesday.

Commencing some Christmas knitting and spinning soon.
Looking forward to seeing what you're all up to.
September has been a busy month with a new school year starting, a little persons birthday and some lovely woolly Spinning days too, so I have some things to share this month. I rarely seem to be able to blog in between though, even about not woolly things, Instagram has taken over a little - so easy to just share a moment, a picture and a few words there. But I do like my blog so I shall get on with todays post.

I had been knitting away on a special gift for my daughter for her 8th birthday, only able to do on evenings after she was in bed, and occasionally hidden under a cushion if she came back downstairs for something! So here is her knitted Harry Potter, I am very pleased with how it came out and she loves him too. A list of other characters is being drawn up!

Knitted Harry Potter

Another quick knit for a friends birthday was a phone cover similar to my own, and I have since made another for a friend who had admired mine. Such a quick and easy seamless knit, only need a needle to sew on the button and it's done.

On to the spinning of the month. Well it's been a busy one. It started with the Romsey Show, an agricultural show nearby, which the Guild attends each year to demonstrate the skills of the guild and we have an interactive area for children to try things out like braid making and peg looming.
Our events organiser this year raised the idea of spinning and knitting a jumper in a day. So it was an early start for us, a raw fleece was on show and a washed fleece was ready to card and spin into the yarn for the knitters to knit.

I had a near disaster about 10 minutes before we started when I was setting up and started treadling to check the tension and the treadle bar fell off! I discovered that the clip holding it on had come off and was nowhere to be seen. Some string came to the rescue, it wasn't perfect but it meant that I could spin on it okay.(You can see my repairs in the picture below)

Spinning in my Camden Cap at the Romsey Show

So there were 4 of us spinning the Jacobs fleece into singles, 2 ladies plying our singles as soon as there was enough to get going, and then 5 people knitting the various parts of the jumper. There was a little bit of swapping about as the day went on and the knitting was finished just in time for the end of the show. It was only then taken home to sew together and block. It was a lot of fun, and we were spurred on by each other.

We had to wait a week to see the finished item, luckily a guild meeting the following Saturday, and our open day for visitors to come and try out the crafts we all love. Here is the finished article, which has been donated to Scotty's Little Soldiers charity for an auction. Such a worthy cause, they support the children of men and women killed whilst serving in the armed forces.

Spinning in the Tower

And finally another day out spinning, a week later at a local Tudor history event. Here I spun some Falkland woodland greens fibre that I had started at home, and also plied some of the yarn that I had wound into a centre pull ball. The remaining singles were plied later at home.

Towards the end of the day I started a new braid of fibre I have had a while, gorgeous Masham fibre in a rainbow of colours. This is delightful to spin, I continued to spin some at home and have one bobbin full and another to do. I have some Tussah silk in a rainbow of colours so I think I may spin this up and see how it would ply together with the Masham.

Plenty of projects in my head, some for gifts, some for Christmas, some just for fun. I have some socks in progress out of my handspun, probably a gift for a friend. I also have a cowl in progress for a friends birthday. I'm also hoping to get in some charity knitting this month before the Christmas knits become more urgent.
A little knitting and latterly crochet has been happening here, but spinning has taken a back seat - it has been too warm to draft the wool in my hands. But now Autumn is approaching slowly, my mind is returning to unfinished spinning projects and planning future ones.

Something I have finished is my Camden Cap - using handspun yarn that I spun early in the year, I started the hat in the late Spring but then left it until about a week ago when I picked it up again and knit to completion.

I love this hat, love how it fits and feels and can see it is going to get a lot of use over the Autumn/Winter months. I did have some issues with the sizing of the pattern - after measuring and even swatching (rare for me!) I started knitting the hat and was pleased with the peak. But when it came to knitting the main part of the hat it was clearly going to be way too big. I pondered carrying on and felting it but that would have altered the peak, so I frogged back to the peak, left that as it was, and knit a smaller size. Result of this is that I shal return to the ignorant bliss of not swatching which has always worked out fine in the past!

The plied yarns from last month have been wound into balls to knit with and I have cast on a quick gift for a friend, a phone cover in the silvery rainbow yarn on the right.

I have started spinning some woodland green falkland fibre, more on that next month, and hopefully more spinning now Autumn is here and life is slightly less busy. I shall also be taking part next month in a guild Sheep to Jumper challenge at a show! Watch this space.
Since my last post about spinning, for July Woolly Wednesday, I continued to spin for the TDF on Ravelry and then took a break for a while but got back to the wheel this last week.

So my TDF stalled a little due to lots of other things in life taking up my time, partly going to Larmer Tree festival too which was a fabulous weekend. July was also hot, hot, hot around here and I found drafting wool a bit too hot to handle.

I shared my Golden Weld dyed yarn last time for my TDF spinning. After that I spun some Falkland and some Cotswold yarns for a dyeing day workshop. Here is the spinning samples ready to go to the dyeing day.

Samples ready for dyeing day

The dyeing day fell on one of the hottest days of July, inside the art department of a school with pots of natural dyes simmering away ... wow it was hot in there! But so much fun, I came away with samples of all the colours in the rainbow and more, Here are some photos from the day and my resulting yarn samples.

I did some more spinning but not a lot, and I have done a little spinning on my spindle both at home and at Larmer Tree but haven't taken a photo of it.

In the last week my spinning mojo has returned and I have spun up some oddments of fibre before starting any larger projects. Here are a couple of yarns that I spun the singles and then plied from a centre pull ball. Ready to wind off onto the niddy noddy and give a quick soak.

Knitting has stalled a little too, but plans are afoot to get some projects finished and others started soon. I have started some pieces with my handspun yarns both in knitting and crochet for my Guilds challenge this year, but more on that another month. Our challenge is "2nd time around" - about breathing life into something old.Dawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16121342298237870670noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7795812784322982565.post-13319343831748442852013-08-07T08:38:00.002+01:002013-08-07T08:38:20.380+01:00Woolly Wednesday August 2013 - join me xWelcome to the Woolly Wednesday gathering for August. This is how my bobbins looked at the start of the TDF.

Basketful of bobbins

I took part in my first TDF last year after watching from the sidelines the previous couple of years on Ravelry. It was a lot of fun, at least spinning every day, setting myself some loose targets and being inspired by what everyone else was spinning. So I have joined in again this year and again my aim is to spin every day, however much that is - some days will be more than others. My targets are pretty loose again too as I am prone to changing my mind what I want to spin!

BFL naturally dyed with Weld

My first spinning was the above BFL space dyed with Weld a while ago so I thought lets get it spun, I'm looking at all the odd bits of this and that to spin up for the TDF. As at the end of Day 4 (yesterday) this was all spun and plied and I love the resulting yarn, golden and soft.
My next yarn is some un-dyed fibre being spun ready for a dyeing workshop day next weekend, something I am really looking forward to. Then it will be time to dive into the stash again to see what to spin next, maybe some bits of part fleeces if I get them washed and dried, and maybe some dyed if I can find a little time to dye it too.

Other spinning prior to the TDF starting was the blue Corriedale in my last blog post all plied, now in skeins. All the Purple Haze yarn is spun and plied and in skeins too and I love how the grey has blended with the other colours in this yarn.
Happily I also discovered 3 more batts of the separated colours of Jacobs fleece so have spun and navajo plied those too to add to the yardage of this yarn - fantastic as now I can look at a larger project for this.

So first is a ta-da moment ... my finished handspun, hand knitted, felted bag. The fibre was dyed (not by me) in Monet inspired colours, spun on two bobbins and plied together with the a gradient effect of lighter shades to darker shades. The yarn was than separated into two balls of equal size to knit a circular bag using up all the yarn for the circles.

A contrasting fibre was spun to knit the gusset in a plain colour so as to get the maximum of the Monet yarn in the circles. I had the perfect fibre in my stash for this.

Yarn for gusset of my bag

Here is the bag pre-felting.

Knitted bag awaiting felting

And here is the bag post felting, really giving that Monet artwork effect. I am so pleased with the results and have received many compliments about my bag which is now my knitting project bag.

Finished felted bag and close up below

Talking of knitting projects, these were in the bag but now off the needles and ready to be gifted to a friend.

Handspun socks

Now the project in the bag is a hat for me using this handspun yarn from some fibre received via a Ravelry Secret Santa swap. The tale of this knitting project is that because it was a hat I thought it might be wise to break with my tradition of not knitting swatches and knit one to check the gauge was good for a good fitting hat. Well. Never again! My gauge was perfect for the pattern, I picked the correct size for my head but after knitting a while it became evident it was going to be huge! So it was ripped back and re-sized.

In spinning news, I've been busy with the wheel at home and out and about with the Guild demonstrating. I have some of the blue yarn left over from knitting the gusset to my bag, and more of this fibre to spin soon.

Bobbins of spun singles

Another fibre spun and on bobbins was this purple/blue mixed blend above, but rather than just plying these together I wanted to spin a grey fibre and create a 3 ply yarn for a project this year. So I picked up some Shetland grey and set to spinning that up to ply with these bobbins. I spun the Shetland at Mottisfont Abbey for a country fayre day with the guild.

Spinning Shetland

I'm very pleased with this yarn and think the grey has just enhanced and brought together the colours beautifully. This was plied at Mottisfont Abbey, where I had a few requests to buy the skeins! The rest was plied whilst spinning at Manor Farm for woolly week - our local working farm museum that we regularly spin at, also home to the filming of Wartime Farm last year, hence my friend watching over me spinning!
Having finished this plying, I then moved onto spinning some Jacobs fibre that I received in the secret Santa swap too. This is commercially carded and separated into the different shades, so I am spinning it to the gradient of these colours and will then navajo ply it to retain them. I had thought to dye this before spinning but decided to spin it first then decide whether to leave it as the natural colours or dye it.

First time taking Imogen to a weekend camping music festival. Not far away on the most wonderful site of an organic farm we have been customers of. The weather forecast as the weekend approached was mixed but glad we ignored it as we had a lovely time, mostly dry but for some drizzly rain Friday night but who cares when the music is good, the beer too and the food was wonderful, plus the marquees gave us some shelter! The heavier rain waited until the music was all finished and we were back in out tent for the night - boy it rained then but we were cosy and sleeping.

The venue Sunnyfields Organic Farm, the festival "The Pulse" a festival raising money for the Childrens Heart Unit at Southampton hospital.

Imperial Leisure - great nights entertainment, such energy

Highlight of Friday night was seeing Imperial Leisure, oh what fun! Dancing in the drizzly rain and watching Imogen impulsively break into some skanking was such fun.

late night dancing

Awoke to bright sunshine that dried and warmed the tent lovely, the ground was dry and the day was set to be good (a couple of brief showers).

Did I mention the food was good? Sunnyfields know a bit about good food. They grow it, they sell it, they cook it and they served it up in abundance for the weekend. My favourite was the Hog roast rolls - a rather substantial meal. Chips were bought and consumed aplenty to accompany the beer.
Spending time with friends, meeting new friends was good - a yarnie friend only previously known online was great too - putting a face and voice to a name. Seeing another friend, Grant Sharkey, on stage in his onesie had to be seen to be believed! Worn ironically of course, highlighting the trade of items made in poor countries. His first of 40 albums being released over the next 20 years is out now, priced £6.19 - the national minimum wage!

Great time was had by all, looking forward to the next one in about a month - just an overnight stay in the tent for that one, then a longer break of 3 nights at another festival in July. It's been a while since we camped at music festivals - before Imogen was born we regularly went to Reading festival, and a few Glastonbury's and others.
